Holly and Darrell’s August wedding at Sassafraz in Yorkville was the perfect combination of everything they love: amazing food, their favourite people, the energy of downtown Toronto and a celebration that felt completely like them.

These two actually met through friends at a karaoke bar—which already tells you a little something about the fun energy behind this wedding. They got engaged in October 2023 and built a life together downtown. They love trying restaurants, travelling, hiking and experiencing the city together, so choosing a wedding venue right in the heart of Toronto felt especially fitting.

And Sassafraz? Such a good choice.

A Sassafraz Wedding in the Heart of Yorkville

There are so many reasons to love a Sassafraz wedding.

Located right in Yorkville, it gives you that intimate, elevated restaurant-wedding feeling while still putting you in the middle of one of the most beautiful areas of Toronto. Holly and Darrell especially loved Sassafraz’s iconic green living wall, which brings so much warmth and life into the space.

It is also one of those wedding venues where everything can happen in one place. Ceremony, cocktail hour and dinner can flow together without guests having to spend the day travelling between locations. When you have family and friends coming from out of town—as Holly and Darrell did, that convenience makes such a difference.

But from a photography perspective, one of my favourite parts is what happens when you step outside.

Yorkville Wedding Photos Around the ROM

A wedding at Sassafraz gives you so many beautiful portrait options within the surrounding Yorkville neighbourhood.

The architecture, tree-lined streets and city textures give us plenty of variety without needing to spend a huge portion of the wedding day travelling. The area around the Royal Ontario Museum is nearby, and spots such as Philosopher’s Walk can also be wonderful options when planning wedding portraits in this part of Toronto. As a Toronto wedding photographer, I love locations like Yorkville because we can create so much variety without taking you away from your guests for hours.

That meant Holly and Darrell could build time into their afternoon for a first look, couple portraits and photos with their eight-person wedding party before heading back to Sassafraz for the ceremony.

Their vision for the photography was bright and true-to-colour, with a mix of meaningful candids and beautifully directed portraits. And I loved that they weren’t afraid of a little movement.

Making Space for the People Who Matter

One thing that was especially important to Holly was having plenty of photographs during cocktail hour.

With so many friends and family members travelling to Toronto to celebrate with them, this wasn’t just about photographing how the room looked. It was about documenting who was there.

The hugs. The conversations. Friends reconnecting. Family members laughing together. The reactions happening in the background that Holly and Darrell couldn’t possibly see while they were moving through their own wedding day.

Those are often the photographs that grow more valuable with time.

A wedding gallery should absolutely have the beautiful portraits you want to frame, but it should also bring you back to what the day actually felt like. Holly and Darrell’s day was designed with room for both.

An Intimate Toronto Wedding Venue With So Much Character

For Holly and Darrell, it was exactly the kind of setting that made sense for the life they’ve created together: city-centred, welcoming, full of good food and surrounded by their people.

And really, that is what makes a wedding feel personal.

Not following a formula. Not trying to make the day look like someone else’s.

Choosing the people, places and details that already feel like you and allowing the wedding to grow from there.
